Amazed by the election advertisements in Austria, I have decided to get my hands dirty and do some analyses about the forthcoming election. derStandard decided to have discussions why Austrians are electing FPÖ, Neos, and ÖVP. Strangely enough I did not find a discussion on SPÖ.

To get the postings I used wonderful RSelenium, for data cleaning tm, and for visualization wordcloud.

FPÖ - 1963 posts

fpo

Neos - 875 postings

neos

ÖVP - 1733 postings

ovp

Top 10 words for each party:

  • FPÖ - menschen, ausländer, österreich, parteien, migration, politik, demokratie, problem, probleme, regierung
  • Neos - parteien, österreich, programm, menschen, politik, neoliberal, weniger, freiheit, neoliberalismus, eigentlich
  • ÖVP - österreich, menschen, politik, regierung, gewählt, parteien, weniger, eigentlich, meinung, arbeitnehmer

Some observations

  • People discussing FPÖ were talking about foreigners (DE - “ausländer”, 231 frequency) and migration (132 frequency). These keywords were not that common for ÖVP (migration - 45, foreigners - 3) and Neos (migration - 5, foreigners - 8).
  • For discussion on Neos keyword liberal is important (199). FPÖ - 33, ÖVP - 30.
  • In Top 10 for ÖVP keyword arbeitnehmer was present and sub-string arbeit (EN - work) was mentioned 259 times. FPÖ - 198, Neos - 114. Maybe because of the introduced 12 hours work day.
